The cards for the fellas

Hi there and hello to you!

How are you at the beginning of this fine week? Fine is not referring to the weather, whether it's fine or not!

Last week I said I was going to show you the cards I made for the boys.

Joey's birthday was in Jan, so his card has come and gone.

Jack's and Casey's are a month apart, so I made them at the same time. Making a few things at once really saves time.

So, here they are. I used the leftover papers and bits from Joey's frame - they're from the My Mind's Eye Alphabet Soup collection.

The card bases are the actual patterned paper. I don't do this a lot, but I don't know why. It's a good idea, really. Particularly if the back of the paper is quite plain or has a ledger pattern (it particularly rocks if it has a ledger pattern).

These ones were patterned inside, but I just chose some journalling cards (one from the die cut sheet and another completely random one from my stash) to put inside to write on.

And the fun really kicked in when I thought of using googly eyes.

The fun started to kick out when I couldn't find the googly eyes, but then it kicked back in again when I eventually discovered them in my top drawer.

I spy some little perforation bits on that giraffe and I'm here to say I did trim them. Obviously not very well, which isn't great, is it? Perforation bits (or punch out bits - whatever they're called) are always cut off in this crafting kitchen, so how these few got missed is beyond me. I was probably distracted with the lack of googlies at the time.

Well, hope they make you smile. Sorry about the photo - it was night time and I had to use my lamp instead of natural light like I usually do.

Casey's birthday is over a month away and I've got his card sorted.

Big 'ole pat on the back for me.

Enjoy your day!

The Christmas ribbon

Hi!

I've been wanting to post about this for a while, but haven't had the chance. It's my ribbon - a new decoration for me this year.

Have wanted to do something like this for years.

The concept? Hang a ribbon and then make bits to hang on it over a period of time. I always thought I'd do one in my craft room, but never have. All of a sudden this year a Christmas version made sense and out came the ribbon and all the bits I had at the time. A shopping trip to Spotlight was necessary afterwards as well. I love crafty shopping trips. It's always fun to buy stuff when you know what you need and you know you're going to use it straight away. Takes the guilt out of it, I reckon.

Now, all this inspiration hit on Oct 18. I know, very early, but I went with it because I've learned not to flick these things - if the inspiration (and actual time) is there, the time's right.

Here's what I made. I'm very much a "hang the ribbon and make a few bits and then see what we need and see how we want to go from there" type person.

I know, not a lot going on, but it was (still is) a work in progress.

The ribbon is hung between three wall lights in my dining room. In our last house we only had a fluro above the table, which made me feel like we were in an office when having dinner. Fluros are good for working by, not eating by.

In this house I made sure we got some wall lights too, so we could have both the fluro and mellow light options. They've worked, and I've gotta say, those lights have come in very handy for decorating the area too. I've hung all sorts of things from them - baubles, bunting, this ribbon, lots of things.

Okay, here are some close-ups of the bits.

Cuttlebug die (it's the one that comes with an embossing folder) from red felt. The ric rac is from white felt and is a Papertrey Ink die. The white felt is self-adhesive, which is fab when sticking the ric rac on. Bought it from Spotlight.

Oh, and most of the things are hung with baker's twine (of course) and that thin gold string stuff you buy to hang ornaments from.

This is the Bigz Sizzix die called Pinwheel.

So simple to make because the die cuts the holes for the brad too. I only put brads in the centre of mine, but you can dress them up however you want.

These two are from the same Bigz Sizzix die called Ornaments (I think that's what it's called). I love this die, it's one of my very favourites. And they go beautifully with the Cuttlebug one to make a nice set of three.

Both the ornaments above are felt again.

The tops are made from gold cardstock. I bought mine from a scrapping shop, but have since found it at my local newsagent too, so you might like to check there if you don't have any. You can use yellow bling too - that works.

Okay, that was the first session of making ribbon stuff. Now onto the second session. This was on the first of Nov.

A little fuller.

Somewhat...

This is from a Sizzix die too. It comes with the stocking, a bauble and an ornament/party light. It's discontinued unfortunately, so I was lucky to get it. Not sure why it got discontinued because Sizzix doesn't have a stocking like this in their range right now as far as I know.

I die cut the stocking in red and then just the top in white. The ric rac is white (self-adhesive) felt again too. Looks cute.

Sizzix ornament again. This time I did a few of them, folded them in half and glued them together to make them 3D.

It doesn't bother me that the tops aren't gold. Not at all.

This one is right in front of the window and when there's a breeze it spins. I like watching it. Pity the pinwheels don't spin. Can't.

Sizzix Pinwheel again, but this time in felt. Nope, can't spin.

You can see how one idea turns into another and then "oh, I've got to try that in felt" happens. You've been there, right? Yep, thought so.

Sizzix ornament again.

That's some paper from last year's My Mind's Eye's Colourful Christmas collection - I was using it up.

And the ribbon's not just for handmade stuff. It's for anything.

Candy canes make for a cheap filler - they're hung using that gold string stuff I mentioned before.

I found the Noel ornament in Woolworths for about $4. I've learned to buy the ornaments I like when I see them.

Also saw the same ornament in Target. They were $2 and were bright pink or purple. I think there were other colours too. Or spaces for them.

And the stocking again, but this time the top is in white glitter paper from Spotlight. It's American Crafts and is about $3 a 12 x 12 sheet. They have lots of colours - it's gorgeous stuff, really glittery and looks fab in real life.

I tell you, Spotlight is a real treasure trove of stuff. I find a lot of fun things down there...

Here's the bunch of stuff I pulled together to make the things for the ribbon.

The gold spray paint is to paint some wooden stars I have. It's sitting on a packet of wooden butterflies that I thought I might paint too. I know, butterflies aren't usually Christmassy, but I thought I'd give 'em a go. I actually just saw some of these butterflies and stars at Photo Continental recently too. They're from Kaisercraft.

What else do I have?

Gold glitter paper, cork sheets and candy stripe ribbon - all from Spotlight.

Not sure if I'll use the cork, but I pulled it out anyway. You never know.

Jingle bells - ooh, these were a real find. Yep, Spotlight.

Not sure how I'm going to use them yet. Maybe in a bunch or hanging under something else...we'll see.

Those letters are from the Tinsel and Twig line that I talked about recently. Was hoping to use them on some bunting of some sort.

So many ideas, so little time!

See the stars? They're the ones I'm going to paint. They'll look nice when they're hung up. Might even put some glitter or something on them.

Mum gave me the little red pegs. I'm not sure where she got them from. You know where I'd go if I was looking for some more, don't you?

Okay, so that's the ribbon. I've added some more things since I took these photos - it's coming together quite well and is a fun addition to the decs around here this year. I think I'm going to be sad to take it down, but I can always do a generic one with flowers and bits on it at some point if I want to. No reason why not.

What I like too (about the whole concept, not just the Christmas decs bit) is that it's an ongoing thing. If I have a bit of time and just want to make something I have a place to put it afterwards.

Do you ever buy something new and want to try it out, but you don't want to sit down and make a whole card or anything at the time? Take a new butterfly die for example. Die cut the die out of some pretty paper, punch a hole in it and hang it up. You got to try out your die and you've added something to your ribbon. Nice.

Oh, one other tip. Try to make things that look nice from both sides. The pinwheels have a definite front and back and often I find myself looking at the split pin at the back. I could decorate them with something, but I've left them for now.

This guy had to come down though...

I made two of him. One for the front of this year's Dec Daily and one for the ribbon.

It was the case of wanting to make this idea I had (the porthole Santa on an ornament rather than a card like I did before), so I went to my desk to do it. I decided what I was going to do with them half way through making them. Do you ever do that?

Anyway, no matter which way I hung him up, he kept turning to the wall and all we could see was the back. I finally just took him down and hung him off one of the shelves on the dresser and now he faces the front all the time. Finally.

The next couple of things I want to make are some of the craft tree ornaments and I also want to do some stars in some other gold paper I found. Oh, and use the jingle bells somehow.

Okay, hope you enjoyed. Talk soon!

:o)

Christmas characters

Hello all,

I realise you're all pretty busy doing stuff for Christmas, but I thought I'd keep it going with the cards right up until Christmas, because if you're like me, you still like to have a look around the old blogos to see what's going on in the world.

These cards today are based on Christmas characters - reindeer, Santa and my own Christmas chick and duck. Who says you can't use a chick and a duck for Christmas cards? Not me...they're cute, so they're in.
Hey, Santa.

He's from the MME Merry Days of Christmas line and the embossing folder is the new Cuttlebug 5x7 Christmas Countdown. And that's the Threading Water punch by Fiskars at the top.

I simply cannot believe how popular border punches are now. A few years ago we all poo pooed them because they were so old school. I've done a complete 180 now though, and love 'em. Hello, favourite punches!

No more poo pooing here.

Were you a poo pooer too?

I said that we all poo pooed them, but I don't know that for sure now, do I? Of course not. Don't want to put you in the poo pooer column if you weren't one.
Interestingly enough, my other favourite punches are scallop circles, which I also poo pooed. Once again, 180, and they went straight to the pool room.

Okay, I think I've mentioned poo enough for tonight.

(It's Monday night at 11:41pm as I write this. I'm tired and I'm feeling a little weird. Can't be telling you where this post is going to go...but I'm warning ya, okay? Could be good...could be bad...)

Hey, Santa.

Tell me, Santa, how do you keep the weight on your stomach and off your legs?

Must be all that running around on Christmas Eve...look at those skinny pins!

You're a nice fella. You look like my punch art Santas. No wonder I like you so much.

I love your big red nose, cute smile...and your big beard.

These next two photos with the tags on them are from the one set of bunting.

The photo below actually shows the first three tags and the photo above shows the second two. I put the one above to go with the Santa above it. Confusing!

Couldn't get a decent photo of the whole bunting, so I had to shoot it in parts. By the way, I call bunting anything that hangs off twill or ribbon like this. You know, tags, triangles from fabric - all bunting.

Ah, cute reindeers.

They've made me smile 23 487 times over the last couple of years.

Good value those guys.

Oh, make that 23 488 times.

See the shiny nose?

"...had a very shiny nose..."

Here's the five tags in order...Rudolph (hello, red nose), Dasher, Dancer, Santa and Comet.

They're sewn onto twill with buttons in between.

Hey, Rudolph, you look like my punch art reindeer. No wonder I like you too. Kinda makes sense when you think about it.

It's becoming quite obvious that my penchant for cute is not just limited to punch art...

And here we are at the non-traditional section of the blog post.

Christmas cards with ducks and chickens on them? How weird...

Not!

I say, "How cute!"

Come on, how can you resist that face? Or beak.

Have you sent all your Christmas cards yet?

Me?

Yes!

Other things to do for Christmas:
1. Wrap more gifts.
2. Make a few tags.
3. Make gingerbread biscuits.
4. Make food.
5. See more lights.
6. Anything else I've forgotten right now.

You?

:o)

PS. I think I kept a lid on the weirdness...yes? No? Doesn't matter!

A Colourful Christmas

Hey everyone,

Well, Christmas week is here!

Been wrapping presents today - still got more to go. Really want to get them done early this year, so I'm not rushing around doing it at the last minute. Not fun!

Just wanted to share some fun cards using the MME Colourful Christmas line. I've showed you cards using their papers before, so thought you may enjoy these too.

I like cards that make me smile. And hey, they're snowy and it's so not snowy here, but who cares? Like the paper, will make cards...that's it!

A couple of the photos were quick snapshots on my desk, not great, but I wanted to keep a record of them. They went to my mum for her birthday. She loves the snow so much she got them as birthday cards. Hey, her grandparents (or great-grandparents) are from Latvia, so it's in her blood!

I gave this last one to Andrew and he really liked it. Didn't realise it was for him until he looked inside. Just the right amount of glitter he said too. Of course he did.

Watch it, girlies, if you ever send me a card, he'll be the one critiquing it, not me! Being the good listener (and bouncer-off-er-er) that he is, he's very well versed in punch art, embossing, Cuttlebugs and all of that, so he recognises things and how they've been used etc. It's pretty funny actually.

Enjoy the cards!

Talking about Scallops

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd show you some more projects you can do with the big Scallop Sizzix die.

To me, they're big punches and I love 'em. Like, I really love 'em.

Firstly, a little treat bag. It looks hard, but it's not.

All you do is make a three-sided box and put it between two scallops.
Make your base and your lid as per normal. Cut one side off each. Fold and tape your two sections as if you were making the boxes (but you're only doing three sides) and then stick them together with tape with an opening at the top.

Glue (or tape) the box to one scallop. When you stick the second one on, stand the bag up so the scallops sit evenly on your desk top. This'll make your bag nice and stable. You don't want to stick the sides down, then stand the bag up and find it's all rocky.

As always, jazz up with embossing, glitter and ribbon. Can't go wrong with those.

The embossing folder is from Sizzix - Winter Set #2 and the folder is called Starry Night (comes in a set of four). It's really pretty.

The snowman paper is from MME Colourful Christmas and that was cut with the Cuttlebug For You die and combo set. I feel like I've showed you that bauble a bazillion times this season, but it's a goodie and it's worth it!

Another quick way to use any big die is to fold it in half, emboss it with your choice of folder (I chose another Sizzix folder called Snowballs from the Winter Set), glitter some of the design, add some ribbon and you've got a cute candy cane, or choc bar, holder.

These would work for a table setting too. And would be a little quicker to make than treat boxes.

I tell ya, when it comes to Christmas decorating, organising and whatnot, you've got to be on the ball with the planning, don't you? Stuff takes time and it's no fun if you rush and then run out of time.

Last thing, I am doing a December Daily album, but it's not a daily album for me this year. I've done the bones of it (it's 8 x 8), and I've been taking photos and doing a bit of journalling, but I've just had no time to put it together. It'll be an after Christmas project for me.

Are you doing one?

Ali's putting up her pages every few days and sharing the pages of others. It's nice to see what people are doing. And how it's snowing over there!

Okay, must go, bye now.

Scor-Pal Wednesday - Embellishing

Hi, and welcome to Scor-Pal Wednesday!

Today it's kind of all-in day. Embellishing and other ways to use the Scor-Pal. Okay?

You saw this card yesterday, but today I wanted to point out the embossed frame inside there.

See it? I put the scallop shape on the Scor-Pal, lined it up and just eye-balled the lines. Worked well!

I also put the back shape on the Scor-Pal and scored the crease line there for the flap. Nice.

Oh, and here's the back of the envelope I said I'd post.

Decorating them with a bit of something really makes a difference. Rounded corners, ribbon, deco scissors or a border like this.

Angie showed me how to make these baubles last year. You can check out her video here.

Mine above is a circle one, they're very easy. And the Scor-Pal makes all those folds very quick!

Sorry about the photo on this one. I'm referring to the criss-cross design on the cone for this card.

See it?

Barely! (Sorry about that)

If you look here you can see the lines from the inside. You might see a pencil line in there too that I forgot to rub out. I was trying to work out the direction of the lines...

I put the cone on an angle on the Scor-Pal and scored a cm apart across the cone. Turned it and did the lines again. I left a margin around the cone to keep it neat.

This is a simple one. Glitter lines.

Decide where you want your line of glitter. Put your card on the Scor-Pal and line that spot up with a groove on the board. Score a few times to get a good indentation. Run your glue pen down that line and shake some glitter in there.

Easy!

There's a line of Crystal glitter on each side of the snowmen on this one. The score lines really make it easy to do.

Yep, another glitter line on Monday's card. Really, it's so quick to do. Try it!

And here's another idea for you! I made these pinatas for a family do and was finishing them off on Friday night. All of a sudden I realised I could make their accordian legs using the Scor-Pal. Now, this was fab because it barely took any time at all!

I know, they're weird pinatas. I had everything ready to go and discovered I had no balloons in the house. I always have a few balloons! Anyway, I ended up using shopping bags with freezer bags inside. They made for some very weird looking chicks, but they did the job!

Hello, chicken legs...

Well, that's it for today. Hope you enjoyed those few ideas and that they sparked a few of your own.

That's the thing with tools. All you can do is find other ways to use them.

See you tomorrow!
